Walled Ancient City, Chaozhou

There is an ancient walled city in Chaozhou, Xiamen. It has become a major tourist stop. Seven city gates allow entry into this quaint city. Below is a model of the main city gate and the wall.
The most prominent city gate is the Guangji Gate Tower which was constructed in 1370 and still stands today, a magnificent sentinel.
Here is a snapshot of the city wall.
This city has many small shops flanking narrow streets, selling a great variety of things, with each shop selling a particular type. For example, there is a small shop that specializes in bamboo products. It sells furniture made from bamboo as well as utensils. One that caught my attention is the small bamboo chair which if, placed on its side becomes a baby chair.
Another shop sells many different kinds of biscuits and cookies.
Beautiful baskets which are usually used to carry wedding biscuits from the bridegroom to the bride’s parents are sold at very reasonable prices. It can also be used to hold fruits and makes a good conversation piece.
This shop sells tea sets while another shop sells different kinds of crockery.
Religious paraphernalia and statues of deities are also sold in some of the bigger shops.
This ancient city is very crowded and its charm lies in its narrow streets and small shops, some of which are very old.
