Night Market in Kuala Lumpur

It’s good to be back and to visit the pasar malam (night street market) where the mix of different smells and sights assail your senses. We went later in the evening as it had been a very hot afternoon and the sun was still high in the sky at 6:00 p.m. As a result there were less people in the usually crowded pasar malam.

Many stalls offering both cooked and raw food had their regular clientele crowding the little space available as they selected and made their purchases. Many people buy their fruit and vegetables
here every Sunday as they are cheaper than in the supermarkets. Fish, prawns and even crabs are available.
Some, like us, buy our Sunday dinner from here.

I didn’t stop at the “lok-lok” stall where skewers of fresh fish balls, pig offals, chicken, beef, vegetables, etc. were displayed. Customers select what they want and dip them into the pot of boiling water to cook. Different sauces were available for you and you spoon out your favorite into a polystyrene container to flavor your food which cooks very fast in the hot water.
Next to the “lok-lok” was the drinks stall which offered sugar cane juice and fresh coconut water sold in bottles.
I bought a small bottle of coconut water.
My next stop was the stall selling “putu piring” which is a local cake made from rice flour. Each little cake had brown sugar spread in the center and then covered with a layer of fresh coconut before it is steamed.
How delicious it is depends on the type of brown sugar that is used. This stall didn’t use “gula melaka “ which is a fragrant palm sugar so it wasn’t as delicious as I had anticipated.
The satay man was in full swing, fanning the coals over which the satay ( marinated chicken pieces on a skewer ) was being grilled.
My daughter completed her purchases and we drove home. We put the food we had bought on the dining table and proceeded to eat with gusto.
Yummy, this is what I always love about Kuala Lumpur, the variety of delicious food that is available everywhere, especially street food which is affordable,
unlike the exorbitant prices one has to pay for fine dining in upscale restaurants.Night
