Old and new housing board flats stand close to one another in the heartlands of Singapore. The new ones that have come up look very much nicer than the old ones in terms of design.
Amid the cluster of subsidised housing is a small shopping hub where the people can shop for their daily necessities as well as have their breakfast.
Many hawker stalls selling a large variety of cooked food, different types of noodles, porridge, local savory pastries, coffee, tea and other kinds of drinks. We had our yong tau foo ( vegetables and taufoo stuffed with fish flesh paste ). I opted for fish ball, cuttlefish, pork skin, bean curd skin stuffed with fish paste together with the flat rice noodles ( kuey teow ). We also enjoyed a cup of thick black local coffee. This means that I will not be able to sleep tonight but it's worth it!!
In another section is the wet market where one can find fish, meat, chicken and fresh vegetables.
Fruit stalls selling a variety of fruit, local and imported are also there.
There are also small shops selling dry provisions.
Outside the wet market one can find shops selling clothes, household necessities and provisions.
This is typical of all the housing board areas in Singapore so that the people residing there need not have to go far for their daily needs or go into the city as it is within walking distance, at most a ten minute walk.
